The car manufacturer Stellantis will compensate European consumers for issues related to AdBlue following discussions with the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network (CPC), the Ministry of Economy announced on Friday.
AdBlue is a mandatory fluid that must be used in diesel cars to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide emissions. But technical problems with the software of Stellantis vehicles incorrectly indicated that their AdBlue tank was almost or completely empty. This resulted in engines cutting out and vehicles being unable to restart, leading to expensive repairs.
At the end of 2023, Stellantis reached an agreement with the Italian consumer authority for compensation. A solution has now been found for the European market.
The Belgian consumer organisation, Test Achats, received over 3,000 reports of problems in Belgium related to the AdBlue system. Most issues concerned diesel vehicles produced by Stellantis, specifically Citroën, Peugeot, and Opel.
Test Achats has acknowledged Stellantis’s commitment to compensation in the AdBlue case and will check that vehicle owners are compensated.
