Belgian athlete Michael Somers retires early due to heart problems

Michael Somers announced on Tuesday morning that he is ending his career as a top-level athlete due to heart problems.

Somers finished 22nd in the Olympic marathon last summer with a time of 2:10:32.

In a press release, he expressed his gratitude to his supporters and sponsors.

Somers explained that his doctors advised him to retire to prioritise his health.

He thanked his coach, teammates, and family for always believing in him.

Somers looks forward to new challenges in his post-athletic career.
