More than half of Belgians (52%) live within two kilometres of a railway station, according to a recent analysis by the Federal Public Service for Mobility and Transport.

Furthermore, 82% of the population lives within five kilometres of a station. The provinces of Luxembourg and Limburg, being less densely populated, have residents living the furthest from railway stations.

However, only 32% of Belgians reside within two kilometres of an InterCity (IC) station, which serves major cities and stops only at the most important stations.

When it comes to metro, tram, or bus (MTB) stops, 98% of Belgians have one nearby. Half of the population lives less than 200 metres from an MTB stop. The analysis notes that the frequency and connections vary significantly between stops.

Belgium ranks 9th among the 33 European countries studied, with 52% of the population living within two kilometres of a station. This is less than Switzerland (81%) and Austria (66%), but slightly more than the Netherlands and France (47%).
